Highway 2 Improvements

Commerce City is conducting two projects along the Highway 2 corridor aimed at enhancing safety and improving multimodal travel along the roadway. These two projects consist of a corridor study and a median redesign. Learn more about both projects below.

Please note that these two projects have different contacts for questions and concerns, so please find the correct corresponding information depending on which project you’d like to reach out about.

Public Input Opportunities

Stay tuned for opportunities to review draft corridor recommendations later this summer.

Highway 2 Corridor Study

Highway 2 Stopsign ThumbnailThis corridor study will establish a unified vision for Highway 2, identify needed multimodal improvements to achieve that vision, and position Commerce City to move seamlessly into the design and implementation of a safer, more functional corridor.

The project team is collaborating with the Highway 2 Medians Design (see below) project to ensure that outreach efforts and corridor recommendations are aligned and meet the needs of the community that lives, works, and travels Highway 2.

Study Goals

The study will identify areas in need of transformative change along the Highway 2 corridor, which is the only direct link between the northeast and southwest portions of the City. Enhancing safety, improving accommodations for people using active modes, and improving character or aesthetic appeal are all key desired outcomes. The study will build from past foundational work to assess the feasibility and appropriateness of various multimodal improvement concepts for achieving them.

Public Input Process

The City will be providing public input opportunities for this project throughout 2024. Stay tuned to the webpage for upcoming opportunities.

Study Timeline

  • February 2024: Community and stakeholder outreach begins
  • February – April 2024: Corridor Needs Assessment
  • March – May 2024: Hybrid public involvement and feedback survey with the Highway 2 Median Design team
  • May – June: Corridor concepts development and evaluation
  • June – July: Second phase of community outreach
  • July-October 2024: Conceptual Design, Costs & Corridor Plan development

Project Update - July 15, 2024

The Highway 2 Corridor Study project team has been working over the past few months to develop improvement recommendations based on your previous input and existing conditions analysis, and now we want you to help prioritize the improvements! Take our online survey through August 16 to let us know where improvements are most needed and what types of improvements are most needed.

Highway 2 Median Redesign

Median Design Project Location MapCommerce City is redesigning and constructing medians on Highway 2 between E. 72nd Avenue and I-76, spanning approximately seven and a half miles. The project aims to enhance safety and improve traffic operations in the corridor. The City is developing medians to improve operational performance and increase safety for motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians in the area. The design will include safety enhancements (e.g. buffers, raised medians) for the biking and walking community. The addition of pedestrian signing and flashing beacons is being explored for pedestrians. This project is in conjunction with a larger initiative by the city that is the Highway 2 Corridor Study (see above). The corridor study aims to assess barriers and identify needed improvements along the project limits to reduce traffic congestion, address safety concerns, and improve accessibility and mobility through the area.

View the Project Map.

Project Goals

The median design will improve mobility and enhance safety on the corridor for motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Improvements will be made to medians, bike lanes, and there will be additional safety features for pedestrians. In addition, signage will be improved, and the roads will be restriped.

Project Timeline

Below are a few highlights of what to expect throughout the duration of the project:

  • February 2024: Develop initial design concepts
  • March 2024: Outreach to stakeholders begins
  • March 2024: Survey opens for public input
  • March 2024: Hybrid Public Open House
  • March 2024: Feedback on design concepts
  • Spring/Summer: Public input opportunities and feedback on design concepts
  • Fall 2024: Complete final design
