Tower-Peña project milestone: traffic switching to new lanes, rebuilt off-ramp opens Saturday

Post Date:05/11/2018 3:58 PM

In the first major milestone of the Tower-Peña ramp and widening project, the rebuilt westbound Peña Boulevard off-ramp and a segment of the new lanes of Tower Road are scheduled to open to traffic this weekend (weather permitting).

The rebuilt off-ramp from westbound Peña to Tower is aligned closer to Peña than the existing ramp and intersects Tower Road further south than the previous alignment, creating a new intersection and traffic signal location. The new intersection will be completed in phase two of the project with the addition of the long-awaited on-ramp from Tower Road to westbound Peña Boulevard.

Tower Road drivers will encounter a new alignment starting Saturday, with both directions of traffic switching from the existing southbound lanes of the roadway to the newly-constructed northbound lanes. The switch is located just north of the new traffic signal for the next few weeks until paving is complete on the full length of the new northbound lanes on the north end of the project.

Now approaching the halfway point, the project is on schedule to be complete in the latter part of this year. Major elements to be completed in the coming months include:

  • widening of the existing Peña Boulevard bridge over Second Creek
  • construction of the new westbound Peña on-ramp
  • widening of the southbound lanes of Tower Road

No full road closures are expected during the project, but drivers may experience delays, lane closures and changing traffic alignments on both Tower Road and westbound Peña Boulevard throughout construction.
