Marks third out of five capital project promised to voters

Commerce City celebrated the completion of the Tower Road widening project today with a ceremony which opened the road to four lanes between E. 80th and E. 103rd avenues.

The project has added an extra travel lane in each direction between E. 80th and E. 103rd avenues, which greatly improves traffic flow and safety of the roadway as well as providing more economical opportunities to the area. The addition of bike lanes, a sidewalk and multi-use path provides pedestrians and cyclists a safer commute in this heavily traveled area.

“Today’s event is not only a celebration of long-planned improvements to Tower Road,” said Mayor Sean Ford. “It’s a celebration of a major road project completed in the five-year capital improvement program approved by voters in 2013.”

Following the completion of Paradice Island Pool at Pioneer Park and three new neighborhood parks (Fronterra, Turnberry and Villages East), the widening of Tower Road is the third of five projects completed through the city’s voter-approved capital improvement program. The new Bison Ridge Recreation Center is set to open next spring at E. 112th Avenue and Potomac Street and renovations to the Eagle Pointe Recreation Center (formerly the Commerce City Recreation Center) will be complete by the end of 2018.

The total project budget was $51.1 million. Construction took flight on May 10, 2016 and the completed project landed on time and within budget. The architect/engineer was Huitt-Zollars, Inc. and the general contractor is Flatiron Constructors, Inc. Commerce City extends a special thank you to commuters and local businesses for their patience and cooperation with the construction efforts, and to 7-Eleven, Starbucks and Sonic-Drive Thru for their generous donations and assistance at the completion event. In addition to this project, the city is designing an onramp at Tower Road and Peña Boulevard, which is expected to begin construction in the next month or so. View more information online.
