Commerce City seeks artists for new public art project
MULTIPLE SCULPTURES SOUGHT FOR TOWER ROAD CORRIDOR
The City of Commerce City and the Commerce City Cultural Council seek to commission multiple public art sculptures along Tower Road, a prominent travel corridor between Denver and Commerce City. Eligible applicants for the project must be artists residing in Colorado or neighboring states of Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Utah and Arizona. Qualifications are being accepted through 11:59 p.m. Friday, June 29, 2018 online through CaFÉ™ (www.callforentry.org).
The cultural council’s art selection committee is recommending artwork that is evocative of the natural history of the area and has a calming effect on commuters. The exact locations of the sculptures are not yet specified, but artwork should be of the size, scale and materials to be sited along a roadway, in a median or alongside a multiuse path. At present, the area is undeveloped prairie land, but the area may evolve to include residential and commercial buildings as Commerce City continues to grow. The artwork should be at least 5 feet tall and large scale to be able to “stand out” in this area.
It is strongly suggested that the sculptures be constructed of materials that can stand up to snow, spray from the roadway (salt and other de-icing chemicals). Acceptable materials include: steel (stainless or Corten) and other strong metals, cast metals, stone, wood. Artwork containing glass, ceramic, mosaic and other fragile artwork will not be considered. The total project budget for the sculptures is $135,000.
The art selection committee will review all complete applications. A short list of semi-finalists may be created and it is possible that the selection committee may recommend a direct commission based on the artists’ submissions. The recommended finalists will be presented to City Council for final approval with installation in fall 2018.
The project selection schedule is as follows:
- June 29, 2018 Deadline for Applications
- Week of July 9, 2018 Semi-Finalists notified
- August 2018 Cultural Council review
- September 2018 City Council review
- Sept/Oct 2018 Execute artist contracts
- Fall 2018 Installation
